Welcome to Toft Cottage Weavery,

Weaving is my passion!
Design, color and structure combine in magical ways to produce an unending variety of custom items reflecting your personality and taste.
I live and weave in the tiny village of Callaway, Virginia, surrounded by the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains, only steps from the Blue Ridge Parkway. My studio is located in the old village post office. Design and color inspiration abound in the vistas of nature that make up my world! One of the first questions that I get from visitors to my studio is “what does Toft” mean? Toft is an old Norse word for homestead/home/farm. The name originated for me when my husband and I bought a cottage in Sussex England back in the 1980’s. Our home came with the name of Toft Cottage. It was such a special place and remains among our favorite memories that when I began my business in 2010 I chose that name for my cottage industry.
My weaving approach combines contemporary and traditional styles, with historic re-creations holding a special place in my heart. My passion for traditional patterns and weaving style was developed through several years of study at Marshfield School of Weaving in Vermont. Working with Kate Smith I also fell in love with antique barn frame looms and to this day, my 200+ year-old barn frame loom is my favorite loom. I design and weave beautiful fashion apparel, for instance, scarves, shawls, capes, and tartans. In addition, I create functional yet artistic pieces for the home such as wool rugs, towels, and table runners. I prefer weaving with natural fibers – the wools, cottons, tencels, and silks.
Two years ago I began to handcraft bags which I call weekender/carpetbags. I buy one-of-a-kind vintage needlepoint pieces and tapestries from Belgium, combine them with multiple colorful fabrics and hand sew these into bags which easily support 3 -4 days of traveling. Whether you like elegant or whimsical, my line has something for you. I have also created a line of smaller bohemian/western bags using unique fabrics from rescued kilim and dhurrie rugs. Accents of leather and brass give them a unique look and combine beauty with function. Each one proudly designed and created for those who want to connect beauty with function.
